Some interesting facts about Nicaragua:

• The country’s capital is Managua

• Nicaragua’s currency is called the Cordoba(NO) and is valued at 18.07 NIO in comparison to 1 US$

• There are approximately 5.5million people living in Nicaragua of which 69% are of the Mestizo race (a mix Amerindian and white), 17% white, 9% black and 5% Amerindian

• The official and most common language used in Nicaragua is Spanish, however there are small pockets along the Atlantic coast that speak English and Amerindian

• The majority of Nicaragua is Roman Catholic, accounting for roughly 75% of the population. The other 25% is made up of Evangelists, Moravian's and non religious people.

• Nicaragua is fairly warm all year round however their rainy season falls between June and October. In the lowlands it tends to be more humid and tropical unlike the highlands which tend to be a cooler climate

• The country has 7 main natural resources including gold, silver, copper, tungsten, zinc, timber and fish.

• Nicaragua’s main industries include food processing, chemicals, machinery and metal products, textiles, clothing, petroleum refining and distribution, beverages, footwear and wood.

• Agriculturally Nicaragua mainly produces coffee, bananas, sugarcane, cotton, rice, corn, tobacco, sesame, Soya, beans, beef, veal, pork, poultry and dairy products

• The highest point in Nicaragua is Pico Mogoton which is 2,438m above sea level

• Nicaragua gets its name from a chief called Nicarao and the Spanish word for water which is ‘Agua’ due to the fact that Nicaragua contains a large mass of water within its borders.

• Nicaragua was conquered by the Spanish in 1524 and remained under Spanish rule for nearly 300 years when in 1821 Nicaragua declared independence. This has now become a national holiday.

• Nicaragua was looked upon to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, however this went to Panama. However in October 2006 current President Bolanos revealed plans to build a canal linking the Atlantic and the Pacific that is expected to be completed in 2018.

• There are four main areas to Nicaragua – Managua, Leon, Granada and Chinandega. More information on these areas can be found here.

• The first female President of Nicaragua came in 1990 in the form of Violeta Barrios de Chamorro
