Nicaragua boasts wildlife as great as any of the Central American countries, with a large variety of exotic birds, animals and insects that will leave you truly breathless. Whether you fancy seeing the wildlife from the tree tops, on horseback or by just hiking, there are many different ways to experience the Nicaraguan wildlife.

One of the most popular ways to experience the Nicaraguan wildlife is by taking up a guided tour on a hike that takes you through into the depths of the jungles where you can witness some of the wondrous animals and get a real feel for what their natural habitat is like. It’s not unusual that you will come across many animals here that you just won’t experience to the same degree in other countries. Tours usually last anywhere between an hour and 4 hours, whilst the longer tours provide you with more opportunities to experience the Nicaraguan wildlife. Tour operators also often hand out complimentary water for your trip, however make sure you bring your own too as the rainforest tends to be a very humid place!

Bird watching is also very popular here in Nicaragua and it is to see why with such a diverse and wide range of wildly coloured birds of all different sizes, including some of the worlds most rarest birds, you may even be fortunate enough to see some birds that are on the verge of extinction in the wild. Guides accompany you on the bird watching tours and take you to the known spots where certain breeds of bird are known to be found. With the guides great eye for spotting the species it doesn’t matter whether you’re a professional bird watcher or not, either way you’re still going to see a large amount of bird life fluttering amongst the tree tops going about their own lives.

Experiencing wildlife from afar is one thing; however interacting with the wildlife is another. Okay, so horses might not quite be considered a wild animal, however you can experience the wildlife Nicaragua has to offer by horse back. The tours generally provide all safety equipment needed including hat, body protection and the relevant equipment for the horse including reigns and saddle. The horses are well trained, and are used to all level of riders from experienced to amateur. Treks tend to last for an hour or 2 and go through both jungles and fields stopping off at certain points so you can take in the breath taking surroundings and local wildlife.

Canopy tours offer a great way to view the wildlife as well as experiencing the incredible flora and fauna on show, for information on canopy tours check out our adventure page.
