There are many airlines that fly out to Nicaragua from many destinations across the world, but don’t be surprised if your journey has connecting flights. If you search well enough, there are some great deals to be found on flights here to Nicaragua, but be aware that Nicaragua’s rainy season lasts from May to November, and that their dry season runs from December to April.

When searching for your flights please take note of whether further taxes that the Nicaraguan government implements when visiting the country and make sure to check whether your quoted ticket price includes these charges.

Such charges you need to look out for are the $5 tourist card that is usually purchased on arrival, and issues your stay in Nicaragua typically between 30 and 90 days. When leaving the country there is a $32 departure tax that must be paid before you leave, and is subject to whether you out stayed your tourist card or not. If you have out stayed your tourist card period then expect to be charged even more.

Make sure you have an entry stamp in your passport before you leave the airport terminal as you enter the country, as you will need this stamp to leave the country. This stamp will also detail how long you are permitted to stay in the country.

On arrival may also be requested to provide evidence of your length of stay in Nicaragua, so make sure you have your return ticket to hand. In addition they may also request evidence of how you will afford to stay in Nicaragua, so provide evidence of how you plan to support yourself with cash, traveler’s cheques and/or credit cards.

When you arrive in Nicaragua you will most likely arrive in the capital Managua. Managua really is the central hub of transport for the country as from here you can get public transport out to other parts of the country, get a hire care or even take a domestic flight to other domestic airports.

As a word of advice, if you are not a keen flyer then we wouldn’t advise taking the local domestic flights. Although a lot quicker than buses and general travel via road, the flights have been called Category 2 flights meaning that there is minimal safety equipment, minimal security, poor quality air strips (often part field, part runway dirt tracks) and small baggage weight limits.
