Isla de Ometepe
The largest volcanic freshwater island in the world, Ometepe sits in the middle of Lake Nicaragua, “The Sweet Sea”, looking exactly the the natural wonder of the world that it is. It has an hourglass shape defined by two volcanoes, Concepción and Maderas, connected by a narrow isthmus. Lush rain forests, verdant cloud forests, fresh water beaches and the friendliest locals in the country make Ometepe a must see. Opportunities abound for hiking, lake fishing and wind surfing. There are also beautiful rivers and waterfalls to swim in, and a visit to a coffee or banana plantation is always worth the time. Ometepe has always been isolated from the rest of Nicaragua and therefore maintains a special mystery and charm – a true enchanted island.
