What on earth are you going to do while you’re here? Of course, you can relax, hang out on the beach or wander around on your own… that’s fine, and definitely well worth doing. But you might well be looking for that something extra. For some adventure, maybe, or for a guide to show you the ropes. There’s just so much to do down here in Nicaragua. While it doesn’t have all of the hard core go-go-go vibe of neighboring Costa Rica – which arguably has more to offer in terms of hard core adventure such as rafting, rappelling, and so on – what Nicaragua does offer is something slightly more sedate on the whole, something you won’t find in Costa Rica. In the colonial towns of Leon and Granada, we offer a cultural twist. Take a horse and carriage tour of Granada with a bilingual guide, or a walking tour of Leon and its ancient churches. Enjoy a relaxing boat ride around the Isletas of Lake Nicaragua, or visit the ruins of Leon Viejo, abandoned in 1610 after an earthquake, and only discovered in 1967. Also in the Leon area, visit the unique, indigenous neighborhood of Subtiava. Still on the cultural tip, you can visit ancient petroglyphs on the Lake Nicaragua islands of Ometepe and Zapatera, visit the craft markets of Masaya, or indulge in a chocolate or coffee tour. That’s Nicaragua for you!

On a more natural theme, we are known as the Land of Lakes and Volcanoes, and a Nicaragua vacation is nothing without seeing some of these natural wonders. Already mentioned above was a boat tour of the Isletas, but we also offer kayaking, birdwatching and traditional fishing in these same unique islands close to Granada. Take a day tour to Zopanga Island for a traditional barbecued fish lunch, or take a cycle tour from town to lake, or even out to the pristine Laguna de Ayoyo. If you like a little more adventure, get your gas mask and helmet on and venture deep underground to the caves of Volcan Masaya, where thousands of bats will fly at you each evening, on their way out for their nightly feeds. Aside from Masaya, there’s a bunch more volcano action here. The cloud forests of Volcan Mombacho with its zip lining tours, or the extreme hikes of Concepcion and Maderas on Ometepe, or the black clad slopes Cerro Negro in the north, with it’s own thrilling sport of volcano ash-boarding.
