Cultural Nicaragua Vacation Packages
From the languid Spanish colonial streets of Granada and Leon, baking under the tropical sun, to the unique indigenous heritage of the Leon suburb of Subtiava, and the petroglyphs of Ometepe and Zapatera Islands… from the English-speaking Corn Islands and the Caribbean Mosquito Coast with their “rondon” and Maypole Festivals to the poetry of Ruben Dario, Central America’s unofficial poet laureate… Nicaragua is an educational and a historical dream. A Nicaraguan cultural experience is a perfect way for you and your family to embrace a new country, enjoy the tropical sunshine, and learn something at the same time!
Nicaragua was settled early by the Spanish, due to their “discovery” of the enormous Lake Nicaragua at the other end of the Rio San Juan from the Caribbean. Imagine their surprise when their galleons entered into this vast freshwater sea, expecting to find the Pacific instead! The lake was a perfect place to build a city, and in 1524, Granada became the first European city on the mainland of the Americas, founded by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba. That same year, Córdoba also founded the city of Leon, in the northwest of Nicaragua, and the sister cities have been rivals ever since. Both cities offer some of the best colonial architecture in the hemisphere, including the largest cathedral in Central America.
Aside from the history and the architecture, the cultural heritage of Nicaragua is outstanding. It seems like someone somewhere is celebrating some saint’s day every day with a parade filled with children in national dress or drums and fireworks. Nicaragua is the land of poets, and each February, Granada hosts the International Poetry Festival in honor of Ruben Dario, Nicaragua’s most important literary figure.
